The primary goal of the language arts program is to give students an integrated approach to literacy learning which encompasses whole language, phonics, literature, and process writing, with respect for the developmental nature of language learning. Students are encouraged to read for pleasure on a daily basis, both in school and at home. Each classroom is stocked with books and students have a regularly scheduled time in our school library.
Primary grades emphasize language mechanics, listening, speaking, developmental spelling, reading, and writing. Middle grades build upon those skills learned in their primary grades and expand to writing to longer themes, debates, oral presentations, and the understanding the finer points of mechanics and grammar. The goal is for students to engage in independent reading, writing, and discussion which lead to self direction in inquiry and thought and the pursuit of lifelong learning.
